Nokia N900 – mobile power-users toy of the year
The folks at Nokia have put out the latest in their new lineup and the top runner is the N900. This is another one of the ” small wonders ” that you just have to see to believe. It does so much you will take quite a while to find out all its features. Take a look at this quick review of the Nokia N900 and see all the different ways this smartphone beats the competition.
The new Nokia N900 ( also called the RX-51 or the Rover ) is one trick pony. This smartphone has one of the world’s most advanced operating system compliments of Linux. This is the first offering from Nokia of an open source platform. The name is Maemo 5 and in spite of the strange name, it will knock your socks off with all it can do. One of the biggest things is also one of the most popular for modern smartphones. The N900 can take all your IM contacts, Facebook contacts, and Twitter contacts and put them all on one page. You can do this while you are working on dozens of other things on the N900. It will not slow this powerhouse down. Another program you will love is called eCoach. This program tracks all your outdoor activities using GPS. If you like sports, this program is for you. You have the money saving Skype on board the N900. Use this program to save money on calls when a Wi-Fi hotspot is nearby. You have ” Foreca “, the weather widget to forecast the weather for you. The internet browser is made by the people who make Firefox and can view just about any page the way it is supposed to be viewed. You will not feel like you are using a ” smartphone ” but a small computer.
When you have a smartphone sporting an operating system with about the same abilities as a laptop or home computer, you need a powerful processor to back it up. That is not a problem. The N900 comes with an ARM Cortex 600 megahertz processor that will prevent you from having to wait for a program to come up. Your input has instant response. There is an abundance of memory included with the N900. There is 32 gigabytes of storage memory, 256 megabytes of Random Access Memory ( RAM ), 768 megabytes of virtual memory. By itself you have enough total memory to store up to 7,000 songs or up to 40 hours of DVD video. If that is not enough you can expand it to up to 48 gigabytes with an external MicroSD card. The MicroSD card is hot-swappable. This means you do not have to turn the N900 off to remove or replace a MicroSD card.
If you keep playing with the Nokia N900 you may forget you actually have a phone in your hands. The N900 has all the things you expect from a smart ” phone “. You have call forwarding, call waiting, photo contacts, and call logging. It will be using the T-Mobile carrier. The phone uses quad band GSM and tri band WCDMA. It has bluetooth to connect to your other mobile devices. It has the fabulous option of having a FM transmitter inside. You can broadcast your favorite music to your car or other radio with the N900. The camera takes very high quality photos with a five megapixel ability. You can store those photos and bring them up quickly with the geotagging ability of this great smartphone. The screen weighs in at three and half inches and has 800 by 480 pixel resolution. Its bigger than some of the competition. It is made as a resistive touch screen and is very responsive to inputs from your finger.
