The New Age of Grid Computing
Computers have really changed the face of our earth and how we communicate with each other. Today, with the help of this information technology we are able to communicate and interact with each other across different continents and internet has become like a huge virtual network that has hooked us all together. Initially, the idea was only to share the information for scientific and military purposes but later it spread into different fields. Also, the size of computers went on shrinking where we moved on from huge CPUs to tablet PCs keeping intact the speed at which the information was exchanged.
Today, we have advanced a little ahead of what we knew in the past and the idea of grid computing is gradually spreading across the world. Grid computing is a simple idea which enables us to share our databases, hard drives and software applications across the world with others. Some people also know grid computing as distributed computing system where computers are connected to a network by Ethernet. Together these computers can perform really better and can give results faster than a supercomputer. However, these computers can be controlled independently and can perform their individual tasks as well.
One of the best features of grid computing is that it lets you share computer power which in technical terms is also known as CPU scavenging where a computer steals unused cycles from other computers which are currently sitting idle. This feature allows computers to perform better and also distributes the computing power equally on the network. This way the computers together can work faster and efficiently like any other supercomputer and provide better results. Even if these desktops and laptops are made of different operating systems and hardware they can be a part of this grid computing.
