I am surprised that no one has mentioned Portland, Oregon. Portland is considered the mini-Silicon Valley. For technology and web, this is more ideal to live and work than Silicon Valley because of cheaper cost of living (cheaper homes, no sales tax, not as congested as other big cities).
While we have large companies like Intel, Nike, Yahoo!, Google, Netflix, Tektronix, IBM, HP, Xerox, Hollywood Video, we have plenty of small and mid-size businesses that will pay very welll.
I myself have been in the web industry in the Portland area as a technical writer, web developer, content manager, content strategist. Content Managers can make up to $75,000. Developers can make $100,000. Experience tech writers are in the $80,000 range.
Besides the diverse jobs and companies in the web field, Portland is a great place to live. Skiing, camping, beach, hiking, white water rafting…..there is so much to do here.
I am not sure about the other cities mentioned, but I do know that Portland has a very healthy job market. It is a employees market meaning that there is a variety of available jobs and salaries are negotiable because it is so hard to fill high-tech positions. Just too many jobs.
